This paper examines the concept of authentic education in the context of a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), advancing a curriculum philosophy grounded in self-development, civic consciousness, and ecological stewardship. Rather than positioning AI as the primary reference point for educational transformation, the paper argues that authentic education must be intelligible both independently of AI and in relation to it. This work extends an earlier philosophical inquiry by incorporating AI as a distinct, though not determinative, context, while maintaining that the foundational concerns of authentic education remain unchanged. The paper does not pursue qualitative or quantitative analysis, nor does it evaluate pedagogical effectiveness; such approaches are well established in the empirical literature. Instead, it contributes to the philosophy of education by deepening the theoretical understanding of what constitutes authenticity in educational aims and practices.
Authentic education is defined as an educational orientation designed to support learners in unfolding their authentic selves. This includes critically engaging with the curriculum they inherit, developing practical skillsets sufficient for navigating contemporary social, fiscal, and environmental conditions, and gaining an unvarnished understanding of the planetary, historical, and epistemic realities they will inherit as adults. Central to this orientation is an exposure to the ongoing disruption of Indigenous knowledge systems through global histories of colonization, alongside a rejection of technological solutionism, passive hope, and screen-bound problem solving. The paper proposes that the guiding ethic of authentic education lies in cultivating learners’ capacity to navigate a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world by acquiring resources, discerning between external and internal validation, and forming reasoned strategies for action in the face of risk and constraint.
